Recently, I taught the self-kindness phrase It’s okay, sweetheart to a group of 120 men and women from across Europe that had gathered in Paris. Since then, I have received emails from both genders telling me how much this one line has transformed how they talk to themselves, and how they can shift their internal state with the three steps of self-compassion. Jennifer shared that she has had more confidence in facing challenges during what has been a tough year. With practice, she honed her ability to hear her judging voice, and the connection to a larger common humanity brings her unexpected relief; she doesn’t feel as alone or isolated in the experience. The biggest boost came in learning how to direct loving-kindness to herself through a compassionate response to tough moments. Imagine speaking to and supporting yourself as you would a loved one, and the possibilities that can come when you turn kindness inward.
How:
1. Deepen your self-awareness. Pay attention to the language you use to talk to yourself. Would you say that to a friend?
2. Make friends with the voice in your head. Realize that the worrying, scolding voice is trying to help you, keep you out of trouble, and be sure you’re okay. Greet the voice with, Thank you. I know you are trying to help. I am okay. I’ve got this.
3. Realize that you are not alone. Everyone struggles. Realizing that you are not the only one to fail, experience job loss, drop the ball, hurt others, or make mistakes helps you see that all of this is part of being human.
4. Have mindful loving-kindness phrases ready. When you think, I blew it or You can’t do this, you can say the following phrases and offer yourself compassion:
• This is a difficult moment.
• Many people experience this. I am not alone.
• May I be kind to myself. May I give myself what I need. May I be strong.
